Art comes naturally in this beautiful area north of Tucson.
It wasn't long before I met up with Diana Madaras who was showing at the Skyline Country Club. I have met her before and I know of a couple of people in Walla Walla who have art from the Maderas Gallery. She is one of the more famous and popular (and extremely hard working!)painters in Arizona. You see her work everywhere here. When I step out the door of our patio home, I hardly know how to choose what to paint from so many inspiring views and plants of the prickly sort. The sun calls us outside and many artists here paint the area with bright, vibrant strokes. Art is decorative and upbeat at the Jane Hamilton Fine Art Gallery at the corner of Skyline and Swan in Tucson. We spent quite a while Sunday afternoon with Jane, who is a friendly and enthusiastic representative for some of the finest artists and art collectors in the area.
Many outstanding women artists including Joby Lamplot are represented. Jane's husband Tom Murray, born in Spokane, is a leading and highly collected artist by Tucson and Santa Fe art buyers and many of visitors from all over the world who want to take some representation of this beautiful area back home with them. Wildemeyer Gallery right next door is a great art source as well. I have always loved Linda Carter Holman's
work and this gallery has some wonderful treasures by this singlular artist.

The sculpture garden next to these two singular galleries is worth the visit on its own merit and the Plaza Colonial center where this is has a lovely old world feel with contemporary gardens. Karimi Rugs has gorgeous art for your floors, Affinity Kitchen design center, and Wild Garlic restaurant and many others are neighbors of the two galleries. and are all notable. The large sculpture of a ranch woman that faces across Skyline toward the gorgeous Encantada Shopping Center and the Catalina Mountains is by a popular woman artist (whose name I can't find right now).

Next I will be downtown visiting the Tucson Art Museum which never disappoints. Their collections and regional shows are always powerful and thought provoking. From preColumbian art to the art of the Native Americans of Arizona and abstract interpretations from all corners of creative domains, their shows represent the area.

Too much to share! I have to get to work and paint some pieces promised and ' times' awasting'. I have a selection of Color Walla Walla Beautiful fine art cards with descriptions and quotations and plenty of space to write a special note. There are 9 designs and they are currently available exclusively at Sweetwater Gift and Home. I will blog about them next. This year's Christmas card collection is available at Sweetwater also, and at Main Street Furniture and Combine Art Collective in downtown Walla Walla. Check out Combine for that very special Christmas gift of art by myself in either pastel or acryic or select from one of the over 20 artists currently setting the holiday mood. The hours at 11-6 Thursday through Sunday, and they are at 130 East Rose Street, next to TMac's Restaurant.

I delivered 8 pieces and look forward to seeing the mix and how it is displayed. Emerging and non professional art is wonderfully represented at the annual Walla Walla Fair and Frontier days which opens this week. Be sure and go into the pavilion to see friends who are challenging themselves n a range of art media. Three dimensional art is present up and down Main St. in the form of sculptures placed there over the years sponsored by public funds.
Since Carnegie Art Center closed a few years ago, there has not really been a professional group showing space representing Walla Walla's diverse art community. Carnegie Art Docents also reached out to include the art education needs in the schools for many years and that task has been reinvented and continued at Carnegie Picture Lab, a program that goes into Walla Walla country schools with art experiences for kids in elementary and junior high.
Plans are in the works for a creative community shared arts space for all of the arts which will include rehearsal space and storage for music groups and performing arts, studio and storage and event space. It is a needed project for all the lively activity created by all of us!

Last month Artsquared enjoyed it's biggest year attendance and sales wise at Cavu Wines at the airport.

For PAINT WALLA WALLA sponsored by and in support of art on the schools, Carnegie Picture Lab had 17 determined and talented artists present in exhibition wonderful depictions of 4 private locations in beautiful settings. The paintings shown here were done this year outdoors with the other artists who have become cherished friends.
With the Holidays on the horizon, we take time to thank each other for friendship, lovely memories, and the happiness and gratitude for our lives here in our beautiful valley . My Christmas cards have been delivered to local retailers Sweetwater and Book and Game in 4 packs assorted and in singles. The cards include the horse and buggy ride around the historic part of downtown neighborhoods, a collage of holiday wine and & flowers, a downtown scene and an angel with a message, as well as an Old World Santa.

Supporting our local inventive and creative retailers is a benefit to all, and a appreciation that is much deserved. My posters, such as these pictured are available year around at local stores and from using Facebook Messenger to contact me for more information and availability.

Enjoy a little bit of local Walla Walla artwork for yourselves or for friends. It is affordable and very diverse and I am not just talking about my own work. We have wonderful artists here of all media and approaches. Take time to attend local art shows. Your support is always important!

I have over 40 card images and about 20 poster images. A fun shop called Trove, has asked me to design a special image for them based on the Harvest Dog painting. I am happy to have the fun of special projects to do for people who have great ideas for ways to personalize artwork. Also, I have become Facebook friends with Amy Dietrich, who is co-owner and inspiration for Frog Hollow Farm, a treasure of vegetables for well known chefs in and out of our area and for us lucky locals as well. The talent and hard work that this family showcases in the incredible offerings they produce is a bonus to everyone who lives here. I love taking photos of the farm and the activity out there, including the comical and sweet goats. This is a perfect inspiration for artists to paint!

My latest wine label is an image chosen by Retter and Company Sothebys Realtors of Kennewick for gifting and sharing with clients and special friends. This sophisticated white grape blend is perfect for Thanksgiving and other holiday celebrations.
Pictures of one of the places 25 lucky artists will be able to visit and try their hand at capturing in their own medium. Some artists work in pastels, some oil paints and others a variety of hands on media to get the impressions and feelings of being in the fresh air painting beautiful local scenes. We are excited to have four wonderful destinations fairly close in to the downtown area that visiting artists and locals will find delightful to paint.

There are two days of painting in each of two consecutive weeks so that there is time for finishing and matting or otherwise preparing to hang works in the exhibit which is at the end of the second week. The Carnegie Picture Lab event for the kids to paint outside this summer produced some budding artists whose work will also be on display September 21. It should be a fun event, including the kids,

Retter and Company, Sotheby's of Kennewick has chosen one of my images for their 'Connoisseurs of Life'
wine bottle for 2018/19 holiday season. Clients and business associates receive a bottle of this special blend of vineyard specialties. I will be getting a chance to pickup the wine and will share the further particulars at the end of September.

Visit Walla Walla has also acquired one of my images for use in special packets for VIP visitors, and the WW Wine Alliance is using my cards for thank yous to clients and friends. I have had several new commission clients, which I welcome. They take me to subjects and treatments of previous subject matter that are challenging and interesting to me.

Local art associations are building toward a stronger presence with the city and other entities to cement the strength of the arts in the area by a street presence not only in public art , but hopefully in a physical arts space here in Walla Walla.

Meanwhile, in the studio, I have come up with new images for cards and posters and am planning other pieces to replace older images. Walla Walla is changing yearly and new interesting subjects jump out at me...such as the new renovation and design for the old train station on 2nd St. I need to feature that in a new way for it's new life.
Bonnie Zahn Griffith is an accomplished and sharing artist who has a list of workshops behind her and ahead of her that would impress anyone of her dedication and talent, and how she shares her skills with others freely and without ceremony. She is giving a workshop in Walla Walla that I have helped coordinate for the benefit of Carnegie Picture Lab. This wonderful organization gets part of the registration fee from each artist who participates. So one is learning and giving at the same time. Painting outside in oil and pastels is Bonnie's specialty and if you look at her website, you will see how wonderful she is at it. Each of us brings our own hand and heart to working with Bonnie to come up with our own interpretation of the landscape before us.
I look forward to share images after these sessions May 29 and 31.

I have had a great deal of interest in my home design, images and prints and posters....from Walla Walla Wine Alliance, ArtSquared Event Art Walla, Visit Walla Walla, Sotheby's Real Estate Tri Cities, and Walla Walla Lifestyle Magazine. The March issue has a 4 page spread on our home, garden, and art and studio views. Halley McCormick is a free lance photographer whose work regularly appears in the Lifestyles monthy magazine.
It was really fun to work with Halley and admire her take on our environment.
Out came the patchwork of carpet and vinyl and in went the plank wood floors to finally finish up the work we had already done in the other areas of our house. I was finally able to get my old kilim out of storage and lay in on my new wood floor in the studio.
I chose to bring back in only the pieces that were flexible and relevant so that I can work easily in any of three to five different media. Fold away tables were chosen so that I can convert the space to guest use if needed. I brought my happiest paintings in to become my decor and also put in works by Margaret Jamison, Jean Jamison, and Dixie Fairbanks Jr. and others. The angle of the drawing board gives me a view of the mountains and great light from over my left side. As I am right handed, this assures that I will not cast a shadow on the work as I go. I hope to participate in at least one group show this year. This was a great opportunity to inventory frames and other materials. Farleigh, my Westie, and I can hardly wait for Spring weather to pick up a few days to paint outside
as well!
Artwork was featured not only at the Clore Center on September 23 where I set up a demo for pastel painting, but in our home during the annual AAUW Walla Walla Kitchen Tour, when we were one of 8 featured kitchens, October 1. Because many of my paintings were away in exhibits, I asked friends who had some of my work in their homes if I could borrow a couple for tour day. The Matisse like figure and the tulips were painted about 10 years ago, but I still love them. The figure is 39" hi, painted in acrylic. The tulips are 16x20. The view of the Yakima River from the Clore Center is one I anticipate painting this year. The brick path painting was one purchased during my show. It is from a paint out session at Green Valley Nursery in Walla Walla. The garden with the Blue Mountains behind was painted at my dear friend's home during our 'Paint Out' in September. The mountains were smoky due to the forest fires in the Columbia Gorge.

Lastly, here is a example of what one is faced with painting outside. Not to be able to spend all day and because the light was changing so fast, you can see what I was able to record of the waterlilies at Leonetti Cellar's beautiful landscaped grounds. This painting sold at Clore Sept. 23. Thank you for all who came to see me that day!Diana Schmidt Artisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13473894476635886387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2956788617344787165.post-16831060097848773022017-09-09T17:00:00.000-07:002017-09-09T17:13:35.766-07:00'Artist in Residence' event at The Clore CenterI have been invited to spend the afternoon at the center on October 23, a Saturday, from 12 to 3:30 p.m. I will be working in pastels on that day so that people can learn how this lively medium is used to create art. A relatively new medium to me, I have soon learned how wonderful soft pastels are to use in the field while painting outside. Soft is indeed what they are, and loaded with pigment. Also I have learned that you must get the higher quality ones to get the vibrancy I like in my work. A small stick no more can cost up to $5 each or more, so one chooses their colors carefully. They drop dust as well, so that's better for outside, but is easily conquered in the studio with a little preparation. I will also include a small trunk show while I am there with prints and posters and notecards. Special pricing on the 15 originals currently up at the Center will be in effect for the day I am there. 20 per cent will be deducted if you take the time to choose a painting on that day.
The Clore Center has a great website and a newsletter and they post on Facebook. You can read about the events there and get acquainted, so next time you are going through Prosser, you will know there is a VERY interesting place to stop and see! The painting I recently posted,
called 'Stone by Stone', depicts the rustic tasting room at Leonetti Cellar in Walla Walla. The owner of the winery brought the rocks from the nearby Blue Mountains to build this beautiful building with his own hands. This painting has gone to Texas now, but it is an example of what can be accomplished in soft pastels.
The finished piece is 17" square and is matted and framed to be 24" square. We visited the beautiful Leonetti grounds for a 'Paint Out' in May of this year. This was started on site and then finished later in the studio, so it is not strictly 'Plein Air'. The sticklers for authenticity want the painting finished on site. This painting was done at the Lavender Farm here in Walla Walla and is a combination of watercolor and pastel, while the close up of the lavender is completely pastels. Our exhibit from the painting sessions will be Friday, September 15 at Art Escape studios in Walla Walla from 7 to 9 p.m.
Our postcard design did not load on Google Blogger, so I substituted this image from a recent plein air session at Leonetti Celler here in Walla Walla. I started it at the site where 20 artists descended upon their grounds to paint for the day. There was so much to look at that I was torn between this beautiful handbuilt tasting room and some of the beautiful features of the grounds. I finished this image in the studio and framed it to go to The Clore Center. It is a pastel in a 2 foot square frame. $695.
The Legends of Washington Wines honoree will be feted on August 11 at the center.
Check their website, Clore Center or Legends on the web. This years honoree has, as all the others, been a Washington resident for 25 years in winemaking. He established many firsts for San Michelle and Columbia Crest and won #1 in the Wine Spectator in 2005 for his Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Myles Anderson, a pioneer in the Walla Walla wine world won the award as the 6th honoree. He started the first Vitaculture and Enology teaching center at Walla Walla Community College, first to do so in the state. He is also one of my first painting sales in Walla Walla. For this alone, he is a favorite person. Their winery, which has been purchased but continues with the aid of the founding people advising, has one of the most spectacular locations in the area. It is called Walla Walla Vintners.Diana Schmidt Artisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13473894476635886387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2956788617344787165.post-71870267928814218222017-07-24T14:11:00.002-07:002017-09-09T16:41:30.598-07:00THE CLORE CENTER in Prosser, Washington New ExhibitI was delighted to be invited to show at the gorgeous Clore Center, in Prosser, Washington, where it is their mission, supported by Washington wine makers, to showcase the history and excellence of the amazing viticulture and enology of our state. The visitor is greeted with dynamic education displays and a beautifully presented array of wines representing the best of the best each month from each vitaculture area. They have just recently decided that it would be another treat for visitors to enjoy regional art on their beautiful walls. I will soon be able to share an announcement for my friends on Facebook and for this blog. We are finalizing a design for this purpose.

The show is up as of July 10 and will continue to September 30. If you happen to be in the Prosser area, you will find it worth your while to go to The Clore Center up on the hill just off I-82 going east up the hill at the Patterson exit. They are next door to a lovely spa and hotel and the 14 Hands tasting room is just 1/2 a mile away. Plein Air painting in pastels at two locations two days in a row in May. The two could not be more different. Garrison Creek Cellars and Les Collines vineyards lie at the foot of the beautiful Blue Mountain Canyon east of Walla Walla. It was a hot day with little shade. I hadn't painted outside since last Sept. except for a couple of quick turns at it in Tucson in December. Totally different subject mattter there...bougainvilla and desert plants. The pieces shown are small and intended to be quick studies. The second day we were at Leonetti Cellar Tasting Room and vineyard grounds which feature lawn and trees tucked in among the buildings and vine rows. They have a gorgeous old world style Tasting Room Building that was built of rocks from the Blue Mtns. The red roof shows the back of the building. The pond drew a lot of attention from most of the artists after the sun drenched scenes of the day before. There were 20 of us out there from 9 to 3 in the afternoon. A beautiful, challenging and enriching experience. I would recommend any artist at any level give it a try! These pieces will be at a show at Art Escape Studios, in Walla Walla, September 15 where our onenight event starts at 7 p.m. All art sold benefits Carnegie Picture Lab, bringing art into the schools in WW county.Diana Schmidt Artisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13473894476635886387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2956788617344787165.post-39950378171524821122017-03-22T15:17:00.002-07:002017-03-22T15:17:44.166-07:00Poster Image, Woodcarving by Miguel Santiago Soriano and Father, Oaxaca 1984

A colorful new exhibit opened March 15 at the famous Ft. Walla Walla Museum. Visitors come from all over the world to this fascinating destination that is located just west of Walla Walla on Myra Road. The outstanding displays of early Walla Walla settlement, farming and entrepreneurship, military life and artifacts, World War 2 and a civil war era Graveyard, as well as extensive archival and research facilities now include a reflection of the lives of Latin American arrivals to the area, mainly in the 20th century. To spotlight the cultures of the regions these Latinos hail from, area collectors have loaned artworks from their travels to 8 Latin American countries. THE COLORS OF LIFE, or LOS COLORES DE LA VIDA features exhibit notes in both English and Spanish and from the 1950's to 2016.

My husband and I have collected woodcarvings, handbuilt clay figures, tinware, retablos, textile pieces and books since the early 1980's. Our collection includes Josefina Aguilar and Martin Melchor, Santiago Soriano, the Jimenez family, and many others. Another large collection includes costumes, woven garments and trees of life, pottery, baskets, devotional figures and mysterious and festive masks. I was asked to assemble the works and mount the exhibit. Along with the Museum's Collections Manager , I designed the displays and researched the various folk artists and regions of Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Brazil, Panama, Ecuador etc. It's been a very inspiring experience for me and I am sure it will influence my next body of paintings. I look forward to being involved with the museum for the year this exhibit will be up. I am also planning a new show for 2018 of my own new work.

Meanwhile, I am updating and publishing new cards and posters that are sold in Walla Walla at Sweetwater Gift and Home, Book and Game, Whitman College Bookstore, Main St. Furniture and FWW Gift Shop. A Beautiful Day to Go to Prosser, Wa.

Another month of painting and experimenting with media, and I am happy that I was able to take some new work up to Thurston Wolfe Winery in Prosser's Vintners' Village last Wednesday. Two artist friends traveled over there with me, about an hour and a half from Walla Walla. With 4 new pieces in watercolor and pastels, and with the helpful eye of experienced artists with me to rely on, we gave the show a bit of a new look. I have been working on a committee for an artists' PAINT OUT, a new thing for me and it is really very rewarding to get on this track of working outside.

3 of the new pieces I took were painted outside, 2 soft pastels and 1 watercolor. Then with that experience to draw upon, I revisited some landscape photographs I took several years ago and chose one that I thought was particularly compelling. I ordered a frame and set to work to portray the panorama of the closest Blue Mountain canyon, a dramatic cleave in the range just southeast of where I live. The canyon basically dominates any views toward the Blues here in Walla Walla.

This piece is 22' wide and 38" long. The hues on the sides of the canyons are large fields of wheat and sometimes the farmers alternate crops and plant peas. Then some areas are left 'farrow' for the land to rest. Also the challenges of planting and harvest is of no small concern when managing equipment on steep slopes. There is a point where planting gives way to Nature's landscaping. The combination of the two makes for great visual drama.

This painting was done 'Plein Aire', from our backyard looking toward the canyon as it looked in June, just before the hot weather hit. Two days later all the green except the forested areas had turned a golden wheat color. The field in front was wheat, but then has since been divided into lots, which have been sold for houses to be built. One has already gone in and this view is to the right of that house. The weeds have moved in, so the area is now wild grass and weeds where the land was cleared.

Large locust trees remain on the steep parts of the property and there are 3 ponds where Yellowhawk Creek re-emerges, and then flows on to meet the Walla Walla River.

Carol's Garden is a watercolor done in my friend's backyard one morning. 2 hours of intense observation and trying to catch the sun before it got too high and changed the whole effect was challenging. Very rewarding to not dilly dally, but produce a suitable interpretation of a garden quickly. PAINT OUT in Walla Walla is September 19 to 23 and the final day includes an exhibit downtown that only lasts two hours and benefits our local program for art in the schools, Carnegie Picture Lab.

25 artists will paint outside 4 full days in four selected locations on private property with particularly beautiful views and features. Registration is still open to those who want to try it or professionals who want to paint in new settings. Any level is welcome. It's fun and stimulating to see all the ways artists approach their subjects.

Contact Carnegie Picture Lab or Artwalla where the registration is processed.

Oh, and please go see my show in Prosser. Thurston Wolfe is open Thursday thru Sunday 11 to 5. There is lots to see and good food nearby.

Gardening, research and pastels have taken up the last few months. Studying the great art of Monet, starting to work in a more immediate manner with pastels alone or using them to add surface interest to watercolor/acrylic paintings. The last one, Goldfinch, was small and created after a close encounter with one of these beautiful little birds, who came to call almost every day, tapping at our window. After a storm, I found a little nest on the ground, soaking wet. I dried it out in the sun and put it back up in our chokecherry tree. He came around again and his bride was with him.
I did not see any sign of broken eggs, so hopefully, they successfully hatched a family.
I found a photo on the internet of just what I wanted to portray. My personal pictures helped with the rendering and with the memories.

The roses we planted are paying off with armloads of roses to share and bring inside.
We finished our landscaping plan in May just before the hot weather came on. I look forward to the next few years when everything grows up and grows in. I am talking with another artist about doing a collaborative show based on garden subject matter.
So many ideas! I hope to make it my best show.

The figure was conjured up from a memory of life when we lived on a farm in Canada. There was one particularly nurturing woman I was fortunate to have in my life, besides my mother. Mother worked so I stayed with Aunt at her farm when we were little....she was my "make believe aunt." Kids remember being loved and shown things and getting to help with chores.

The technique on all four pastel pieces was totally different. The surfaces ranged from watercolor board (the finches) 12x12", gessoed panel full of brush strokes underneath the pastel work(farm), (18x24), black mat board (cafe au lait) 20"x32", and again watercolor board and black matting (pomodora). I look forward to exploring the medium with lots more surfaces and subjects in this coming show.

Meanwhile, if you are near Prosser, stop at Thurston Wolfe (after I add these next week) to see these and many other paintings on exhibit in their tasting room.
Chance, was rescued and brought home by Rebecca Yeaman, co-owner of Thurston Wolfe, several years ago. His job as winery dog underlies the informality of the hospitality of their wine tasting room. His presence there represents softeness, friendliness and local color. Prosser is a vibrant community and a visit to Thurston Wolfe and their neighbors is laid back and upbeat at the same time. This painting is 24" square, acrylic on panel. I took a picture of Chance as a very young dog about 5 years ago which I used as my inspiration for this piece.
He has the beautiful tricolor coat that the Airedale breed sports. I decided to introduce colors that compliment his coat and that create a certain electrical energy around him. The lines on the floor make the composition more compelling and the active brush strokes in the upper part of the painting are meant to capture his high spirited personality.Diana Schmidt Artisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13473894476635886387noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2956788617344787165.post-43859792063474406312016-04-19T08:10:00.000-07:002016-04-22T13:30:48.792-07:00

Give Me the Simple Life
This painting, inspired by the young farmers that come to the local farmers market each week, is meant to reflect what the new set of values is for them. They have chosen to grow their own food responsibly and by sustainable methods, to repurpose old homes and farmsteads from which to make their livelihoods, and to appreciate the products of their own labors. The cat symbolizes those that they care for. The composition is iconic and the colors represent both Spring and Fall. The black and white is the essence of simple thinking, standing for clarity, not extremes. The technique is direct and the colors pure. The landscape is embracing, the doorway a symbol of decisions to enter and/or to exit a phase of life. The surfaces primed but left unpainted show that after many years of filling picture surfaces, some can remain untouched.

This painting is at Thurston Wolfe Winery in Prosser, Washington, as part of a show I put up last week. They are open Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This painting is 18x24", $950. Their Spring Release weekend starts the 22nd, Friday and goes through the entire weekend. Prosser is a delightful, diverse area to visit. Hope you have a chance to see the show.Diana Schmidt Artisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13473894476635886387noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2956788617344787165.post-10403316460807973842016-02-04T09:23:00.003-08:002016-02-04T09:23:58.193-08:00Response to Requests Cards and PostersThanks for your interest in my cards and posters. I have 3 retailers in Walla Walla.
Book and Game, Inc. 1st and Main, has the largest selection of cards. Sweetwater has cards and posters, and Main St. Furniture has both as well, and the cards are packaged in groups of 4 rather than sold singly.
